Nova ("we", "our", or "us") is dedicated to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy details how we handle information in the Nova media player app for iOS, macOS, and tvOS, as well as on our website.
Our philosophy is simple: your media is your business. Nova is a local media player that connects directly to your own self-hosted servers. We do not operate cloud storage servers, and we do not collect or monitor your personal media library, files, or streaming activity.
1. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit any of the following data to our own servers:
- Media Files & Metadata: Any video, audio, subtitle, or photo files that you scan or play in Nova are processed locally.
- Server Credentials: The IP addresses, hostnames, usernames, and passwords you use to connect to your SMB or local network servers are stored securely on your local device.
- Watch History: Your playback status, watch history, and progress positions are stored locally on your device or in your personal iCloud account. We have no access to this data.
- Personal Information: We do not ask you to create an account, register, or provide an email address to use the app.
2. Local and iCloud Storage
All app settings, server credentials, and watch history are stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud sync, this information is synced using your personal Apple iCloud Container. This sync runs directly through Apple's secure infrastructure to your personal iCloud space. We cannot access or view your iCloud sync files.
3. Third-Party Services
To provide a rich media browsing experience, Nova may make network requests to the following third-party services:
- The Movie Database (TMDb): Nova fetches metadata (posters, cast details, plots, ratings) for your files from TMDb. During these requests, standard network metadata (such as IP address) is sent to TMDb, but no credentials or personal identify information is transmitted. TMDb does not receive info about your file locations or network layout.
- Apple App Store: Purchases and subscriptions (Nova Pro) are handled directly by Apple's App Store via StoreKit. Transactions are governed by Apple's privacy policy.
4. Local Network Access
Nova requires Local Network permission on iOS/tvOS to scan and connect to SMB servers or computers on your Wi-Fi or local area network. This permission is used exclusively for playing media from your local network. No scanning data is reported back to us.
5. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date at the top.
